In the model prayer of Matthew 6:9-13 we see Jesus teach His disciples to pray, “Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.” The question that I often have to ask myself is, “What does the kingdom of Heaven look like?” We know that Heaven is a beautiful place with streets that are paved with gold, but have you thought about it? I believe God wants us to use our minds to think and ponder what His kingdom is really like, not just take that prayer for granted.
We know that God has revealed Himself to us in the Holy Scriptures and He actually has a lot to say about His kingdom. Romans 14:17 says that the kingdom of God is “righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” Righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit are all things that we can experience and live out right now in our lives bringing the kingdom of God to those around us since the Holy Spirit is our helper.
When it comes to righteousness we know that the blood of Jesus imparted His righteousness to us (Romans 3:25) but we also have to daily choose to honor His blood that was shed by living in “right–wise–ness”. We can choose to bring righteousness to earth as we humbly follow the Lord.
As far as peace is concerned we often mistake the situations and circumstances of this world with His kingdom. The peace of God offends the sensibilities of this world because it supersedes circumstances. No matter what is going on we can choose to have faith and rest in the peace of God that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:6-8).
Joy is the most underrated aspect of the kingdom of God as it pertains to the Christian life. Most of us mistake joy for peace. Joy is not just being content. When we think of the work of God in this world there should be a response that overwhelms our ability to not smile. One of the words for joy is where we get our word euphoria from. When John the Baptist met Jesus in the womb he leapt for joy! Literally skipping and dancing with joy! I think we can all practice a little more joy!
With righteousness, peace and joy we can bring the kingdom of Heaven to earth with some help from Holy Spirit.
